“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”- Confucius
Children are like sponges- receptive, and soaking in all that they see around themselves.
When children see how hard their parents work every day, they learn that nothing is impossible to achieve if you set your mind to it, and it prepares them to work hard too. It is crucial to talk to children about why we all need to work and the importance of choosing the right kind of work- something that interests them and that they love doing. We also need to teach them that no job is too big or small and that nothing can be achieved by looking down on hard work.
As parents, we can teach children responsibility and develop an early respect for work by setting chores for them at a young age. Learning to take care of their own belongings and their surroundings are the first important life and work skills they learn. It can be little things like setting the table or helping to wash and dry the dishes, helping you choose vegetables at the grocery store, dusting the house or even helping you arrange your office papers and keep them in order. While doing this you can explain why it’s important for each member in the family to do their share of work.
It’s also extremely important to expose children to all the career options that are available for them nowadays. If your workplace allows it, have your little one accompany you to the office so that he/she can see what their mommy or daddy does. It not only fills children with pride, when they see what their parents do, but they also get a sense of responsibility towards work. Take them to visit different places around your city, like hospitals, schools, airports, hotels, theatres, construction sites etc. and talk about all the different jobs that people do in these places. Have them conduct mock interviews with people in your family, like uncles, aunts, older cousins and grandparents about their careers.
The best way that all parents can teach children love and respect for work is to be a good example in your daily life! When children see both their parents work hard together and support each other professionally and personally, they grow up making the right choices and become responsible adults.
Let’s try and build a new generation of happy workers who will excel both in the home and at the workplace! We welcome young explorers to go around exploring careers on V-Explore careers.
